And another thing - Early 2000 series 2 manual transmission

Does anyone know what could be done / needs to be done to make my '71 2000 manual drive more smoothly / tightly? On the road it feels generally loose / sloppy and rattles, growns, squeaks etc when going over bumps, sleeping policemen, and when cornering. I think it's what is usually referred to as running gear / drive train wear, but am not sure exactly what could be replaced (ie bushes) to reduce the sloppiness, and tighten up the whole ride comfort. Dampers seem OK as it soaks up the bumps well, but there seems to be wear in the transmission / prop-shaft / drivetrain etc. A checklist of areas to eliminate would be very useful, as I will not be doing the work myself, so the more input I can have to the process diagnosis, the more I can provide pointers to whoever ultimately does the work.

I can recommend rebushing with the soft type polythene bushes. They'll last forever though the ride is more taut than with the standard rubber. Check for play in the steering box, this can easily be adjusted out, check out the workshop manual.
If the dampers look old I'd replace them too. They can be good enough for the MOT yet still much worse than new ones.
Check for play in all the ujs in the drive train by holding them on both sides and twisting. There should be no play. Get some grease into the sliding joint on the prop too.
Check the wheel bearings too.
That's all the cheap things I can think of offhand. Hope some of them help.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Nick. This gives a good basis for the process of restoring the car to it's original ride comfort / driving quality. I will also discuss the bush replacement with the chap who will be working on the car for me.
