Alternator recommendation.

Hello All,

M.o.t tomorrow! Nearly finished the refreshtoration (I promise I will take some pics!) in preparation to be one of the wedding cars at my wedding next month, have had the return of the ignition light after having rebuilt alternator previously, can anyone recommend a replacement?

Also starter motor doesn't retract instantly on start up so there is a 1-2 second noise, easy fix or exchange?

Many thanks

Richard.

Is it definitely the alternator or could it be the relay?

On a v8 it's obvious to replace it with a rangerover alternator, as it has all the electrics built in and transistorised. Dont know if a similar swap is possible on a four pot?

Easy fix, the starter pinion is sticking from dirt. Once you remove the starter it will be obvious, you just clean it with some petrol and make sure it slides freely on its shaft. I presume that your car has the pre-engaged starter fitted.
Removal - refitting of the starter will take most of your time, but since it's only an SC it's not too bad. You remove the top starter bolt by working from above, the bottom by working under the car, and you also remove the starter from below.
If the mileage of the car is high, i would be tempted to replace the starter brushes, armature bushes, and solenoid contacts at the same time. Try to feel for side play in the armature shaft to get an idea of how tired is the starter.

M.o.t passed, no advisories!! And ign light has gone out, thanks demetris will whip out starter motor tomorrow, just been on a 130 mile shake down and all good.
