Alternator brush renewal

I feel like an idiot asking this but where is the screw that holds the plastic end cap on the alternator. I have the same problem as Ron mentioned in his post regarding the ammeter showing negative when the headlights are on so I thought I'd check the brushes. I do get 14v plus at the battery with the engine running.
Also how can you find out which model of alternator you have as I can't see any ref. Number anywhere.
Thanks

Hi Colin
Car is series 2 1973. But could be earlier as I don't think it's original engine.

There should be a bolt down at the bottom of that hole, and another one elsewhere on the cover.

Great. How do you get to it. Will try a socket tomorrow. I don't want to take the alternator apart, just get to the brushes.

I don't think you can get the alternator apart without taking the cover off anyway. 1/4" drive socket should do it.

Hi Mike,

I am assuming that your ammeter is showing the discharge at speeds off idle? With an 18ACR at an engine speed of circa 650rpm, with the headlights on, you'll always see a discharge. At higher engine speeds though, the ammeter should come back to the null position, if all is as it should be.

Ron.
