Air filters

Hey,

sorry for the basic question here, but I'm wanting to swap out my current air filters which are the original design floppy things for something I can clean and is a bit more modern. I want to be able to put the filters into the original airbox assembly so it all looks nice and original under the bonnet, I was thinking of these K&N ones: Rover V8 K&N Air Filters | Rimmer Bros

Has anyone used these or done something similar I could consider?

Thanks for you're time

Theo

cool, thank you so much. Does this mean they still fit in the original air box and I don't need to do anything with the carb set up?

Thanks for you're help Rockdemon

If you free up breathing, you lean the mixture all things being equal. As it's already on the lean side, especially in the mid-range, you may need to go for a richer needle. Only a rolling road will tell you for sure.

cool thanks, they claim on there website you don't have to change anything, but guess there is only one way to find... my other concern is that the K&N ones fit inside the airbox too, must people seem to run them without the airbox assembly...

Depends on the application. EFi cars and some downdraft carbs you won't. SUs are very simple in operation, the trade off is the needle/jet needs to be quite accurately matched. I have this problem with a slightly hotter camshaft.

outside the airbox if you want a power gain.... The trumpet is a little narrow for feeding those air filters (true for the k&ns as well)

As Peter says you'll want BBW-BAC needles or KP if on HS6....

Another thing I found is you are better off tuning with the HIFs rather than early HSs as there are more needle options available. I've been looking for some HIF6 pistons to fit my HS6s to convert to the spring loaded needles.

There is of course no guarantee any of the standard offerings are optimal for your engine across the entire rev range. If power is your goal then the standard offering in a standard engine isn't optimal particularly either, it's more focused on economy.

This is where most people start to move away from SUs. They are brilliant and rarely need attention if everything is left as standard but need tweaking even with the most minor changes. That and the lack of a "pump" effect which gives an extra surge of fueling on hard acceleration which means almost anything else feels more lively when you drive.

This is why I want the 14CUX system. This is incredibly simple, brilliantly adaptive, cams, airfilters, porting, even different fuel grades all handled by lambda feedback. More responsive, more powerful, more economical, cleaner (both for the environment and the engine), better start and warm-up and overrun cut off for useful economy improvements in town driving..

I'm not sure that is true - from what I have read the bellmouthed end makes it a lot less restrictive than it looks, and the diameter didn't change drastically even on the EFI Range Rover:

I use a similar filter can from an SD1 on my EFI'd 3500s, it's the same as above but the trumpet bit is shorter so it actually fits in the engine bay!

I'm wondering if the V8 SD1 box is a good swap (does it fit)? You could cut the "snout" off before the section where it narrows:

Hi, Yes an SD1 filter will fit but it's dimensionally different, the P6b one is 7" in diameter and the SD1 item is 6". The SD1 has a different ie. longer filter element which is harder to find and more expensive . As a cone filter is going to be installed care is needed because the base diameter of some are larger than 6" and so won't fit.

Hi, AFAIK the P5b and early Range Rovers with Strombergs had the oval air filter, Some SD1s may have been fitted with them when strombergs had to be used because of SU supply problems. It's not unknown for BL to mix and match.

I have the air filters as i bought the car (rover 3500S) from rover sd1 on it. I never had problems with them.
