ABS for P6B - Am I insane!

Well I am back and with another insane plan to drag my P6B into the new century kicking and screaming. I have managed to lay my hands on the ABS/ETC/HDC setup off a Landrover Freelander. The next insane plan is to graft the whole setup into the poor old blue beast.
The control block for the system sits in the position that the servo normally fills and the brake lines are all doubled up for the push and return of fluid. Only problem with the whole thing is that the Freelander uses drums at the back!
New discs are being cut to fit and will be matched to a new set of Discovery front swing calipers and the back will get a set of calipers off a Nissan Pulsar.
My tame brake expert has assured me that we can make all the kit fit since the bores of pipes are the same front and back, and the control block can be electronically adjusted to vary the brake force front to back. All white mans magic if you ask me!
The upshot of this is that the car will have four wheel ABS, and with the front wheel ETC disabled, Traction control (sort of a limited slip diff effect type of thingy) on the back. I means that I will be able to put the 200+ horses of the new engine to the road without inadvertantly exploring the wrong side of the road, trees, bushes etc.
Finally I ask anyone with suggestions to let me know if they think that this is a good idea or am I just a loony. ;) ???

Hi Guy,

Clearly you are mad, but sounds fantastic and a good idea since you have increased power.

Good luck with the conversion.

Would the rear diff casing from a early car with Dunlop brakes give you less hassle on the back?

Arthuy

Of course your mad, the only real questions are does it work and where did you get the bits?

Maybe at a push, how much and can I have a go?

Good luck and keep us posted

Matt

Its all turned to custard. The new fancy kit has failed to live up to its promises and I am left scratching my head as to what went wrong.
The new discs fitted perfectly and there were no problems with the setup of the actual calipers either front or back. The headache is the control box/electronic thingy that makes it all go. Its seems that we either have a dodgy box or that the system cannot cope with discs at the back.
The whole lot has been fitted to 'The Mule', a 1976 V8 that is used as a test hack and spares car (needless to say it is not roadworthy by a long shot). We are experiencing the backs locking before the fronts, and the fronts only sort of working a bit at random intervals, usually when the brake is not touched at all!!! Rotten brakes should not be locking on at all!
So I am going to complete the blue car with a semi standard setup of grooved and drill fronts from EBC with a set of greenstuff pads to suit, and standard discs aft with GS pads.
But fear not crazed modifiers, I will persist with the ABS/ETC setup and one day will get the damn thing working properly. Just as soon as I convince myself that it is worth the heartache!

Out of interest what did you trigger the wheel speed sensors off ?, did you fit the sensor rings from the landrover ?

Richard

As an aside, I have an article (5 pages) from YOUR CLASSIC dated June 1994 showing how they fitted an ABS Brakesafe kit to their staff Rover 2000. Intended as an aftermarket kit the cost was £300 and they seem to have been very impressed with its operation.
Regards, John.

In reply to Richards question the speed sensors are running off a modified disco ring that lives just behind the front discs. The rear has a custom setup that involves a freelander front sensor mounted in front of the rear calipers. The sensors showed OK on the diagnostic thingy, and we feel that it may be the actual pressure block that is the problem.
I will continue to play with it with a view to fitting to the good car later on, but at the moment I just want her back on the road! ???
Where can I get a Brake safe kit? Do they still exist??

Guy.

Guy,
ABS Brakesafe, 33, Pycroft Road, Chertsey, Surrey. KT16. 9HT. Telephone 01932 571715 is the only info' from this article dated June 1994 so may no longer exist. Perhaps a member living in this area could advise if the company is still trading
Hope this helps.
Regards, John.

Hi,

to try and answer a couple of previous questions, rear disks should not be a problem - I have read of at least one Freelander with Disco disks on the back.

Secondly - the rears locking first. Does your set up have a bias valve to put more pressure front or backwards?

Hope you get it sorted - still sounds fun

Matt
