5 speed gearbox on 3500s

I have searched the forum and found many threads on the subject but can't actually see if anyone has actually managed to fit a 5 speed box (any box) on a V8.

Does anyone know of anyone who might have or indeed any more information as to how feasible it is?

I fitted an SD1 5 speed to my 3500s way back in the mid 1980's, and it's still going.
Excellent! Could I trouble you to let me know what is involved (if you can remember that is!)

I own one of the last SD1 Vitesses and the box allows much better cruising with that lazy V8! :p

As far as I remember, I used SD1 V8 box c/w complete clutch spigot bush and remote, with a P6B auto propshaft.
Before I removed the 4 speed box I noted the relative position of the centre of the rear of the mainshaft in the tunnel.
I used an SD1 slave cyl which meant cutting the flexi pipe and flaring on the correct end. ( I think the P6B cyl can be used but it needs a spacer, quarter inch I think)
The mounting brackets in the tunnel need removing or folding back. I cut and narrowed an SD1 crossmember keeping the rubbers and buffer, and bolted this thru the floor. (I wasn't too happy with this at the time, but it never gave problems so never got changed)
The gearlever came up thru in exactly the right place. The only thing needed was two screws the same as the one under the h/b boot fitted thru the console into the tunnel at the rear of the front ashtray. (the 5 speed has a quadruple gate which just made the console break, it just had a fraction too much movement from reverse to fifth.
I modified the 3500S speedo cable, and speedy cables recalibrated the speedo.
The cross brace on the exhaust lines up with 2 holes in the bottom of the box and with suitable spacers is fitted there.
And that's about it, easy peasy, and at the time I should think it was one of the first few done, and definately worth doing.
Incidently I have always used ATF G in the box and it loses that clunky change the 5 speed can have.

Just a minor point... Ken Tomlinson, the guy who designed the LT77 has said in recent time that a good quality gear oil should be used in place of the ATF.
Dont bother with EP rated oil as it will disolve the bushes inside the box!

TBH I think ATF is fine... it certainly gives a more positive selection than 20/50.
THe synchro on 3rd gear is a bit of a weak point incidentally... eventually you will have to double declutch to get it to engage but on a new box should do 150k before you get problems.

I've one fitted. Do check the box though, as there were some shorter ratio ones for MOD and Sherpa van use for example.
Aside from the heavy clutch and being pretty notchy, it's ok. Mine has quite a bit of layshaft whine as it ages.
