thats not quite true, viscous fans are supposed to lock up tighter as the airflow going over them increases. in fact land rover discovery 3 has a heating element in it to make it lock up when the ecu decides its appropriate
It is probable that all viscous type fans are not made the same, technology has moved on since P6 and SD1 days, I did not know that a fan had a heater in it.
I am happy that the engine stayed cool and behaved perfectly with the Evans coolant at zero pressure, that is taking a lot of stress off of elderly components.

I am aware of quite a lot of viscous couplings that are working in the way that you describe, but i was talking specifically for the Holset unit that was used during the '70s and '80s in Rovers and Land Rovers. Their slip rate remains constant hot or cold. They never lock up, and they never spin free like others do.
 
That's correct, they don't lock up like my vitesse used to.
They slip at approximately 2,500 rpm from what I've read in the manual and that sounds about right when you listen, mind you that's providing the viscous isn't worn out.

I can get a hold of the shaft at the front and move it up and down, there is room in the splines.
I have also found out that the shaft was not built correctly from new, the arrows don't line up.
When I assemble the spline it can go either way one side or the other of the arrows, but not spot on.
The closest way is 4 degrees out.
Oh and the front universal joint is stiff and notchy in one plane.
Oh and it is fully extended when fitted.
So ....... it is too short, has fubar'd joints, sloppy splines and is 4 degrees out of factory phase !
and Father Christmas has just left for another year, oh dear.

Well the drive line vibration proved quite a challenge to pin down. I put new joints in the propshaft and had it balanced, fitted a 25mm spacer kit from Britpart to close up the splines and the vibration was still there.

I turned my attention to propshaft angles, when I put in the 5sp I carefully set the box pinion flange the same distance down from the tunnel as the auto box thinking all would be well, however when measuring the box flange it was inclined 5 degrees and the diff flange was vertical.

I had just fitted repro diff mounts that put the diff up higher at the rear, not helping. So I made up some packers to raise the gearbox as high as it would go and packed the rear of the diff down and raised the front of the diff up, with all this the two flange angles came to 1 degree out. Still the vibration was there - ho hum !
So I unbolted the driveshafts and lo and behold found the issue, one inner joint seized in one plane and the other inner joint dry and notchy.
So those were replaced, and all is smooth :) very smooth !
So I will see if the advance curve in the dist is OK, then maybe back to the rollers.
