Hi all,

I've scoured differnet forums and book of faces and I thought I'd make a list of everything that I'll need to swap in a 4.6 into my p6b. Ron and others, can you chime in with your experiences and thoughts on what I'll need?

Engine:
4.6 block - top hat linered
heads - I have SD1 heads and 4.6 heads. Which would be better to have ported etc?
Crank/Rods/Pistons - haven't decided. Probably standard crank, maybe standard rods? ARP bolts
Intake - Offenhauser
Carb - AFB/Edelbrock
Ignition - ? P6b distributor with Illuminition kit?
Front timing cover - SD1 or P6b. Any thoughts on which is better?
Sump - p6b
Camshaft - no idea. Can I use the 4.6 one or will I need to use something else if I run a distributor?

Flywheel - I have a 3500S one
Clutch - ?/I have a 3500S one but I don't think it will work with the W58
Master - brake?
Slave - have a Dellow one to suit.
Gearbox - W58
Shifter and shifter housing
Speedo cable - custom?

Tailshaft - custom

Down the track:
Complete Jag IRS with XJ40 outboard brakes
Complete front jag IFS or just Jag brakes.

Have but not fitted:
Uprated sway bar

Hit me with your feedback and ideas. What worked for you or didn't work?
The original motor is going on an engine stand and I have access to a few dead p6bs as well.

The very last heads are on a different casting and are slightly better. In fact using the composite gasket, these won't need to be skimmed whereas the SD1 ones will or you'll lose 0.5-0.6 in CR

Cool. Cheers Peter.

Edit. I'll also put in a better fuel pump, possibly aluminium lines to replace the nylon ones and use one charcoal cannister instead of 2.

If you use arp stud kit for the crank main caps it is recommended by arp to have the mains tunnel line bored with caps torqued up to the arp torque setting which is higher than standard bolt setting as using arp studs without line boring will distort caps and shells. I had this done on my 3.5 block (but not assembled yet) Same applies if you replace big end bolts with arp items.

Hi Geoff,

Now this sounds exciting :)

I would opt for the 10 bolt later heads given a choice, as Peter mentioned, they are a better casting and will work right from the off with composite gaskets without any issues.

The factory bolts for the main bearing caps are high tensile, and being cross bolted, you won't have any issues there. Same with factory crankshaft, rods and pistons.

Lumenition works without issue with the 4.6. Find an SD1 timing cover if you can, as you can run the deeper oil pump gears, plus the shaft is supported better than in the P6B cover.

P6B sump, the front section needs to be relieved to clear the throw of the crank.

Camshaft, you can use the Rover pre pollution item or an Australian factory made item. I'll look up the specs and send them to you!

Look forward to seeing it all come together !

Ron.

Thanks Scott and Ron.

Ron: Cam - I think it's Wade that's gone out of business, but I have Desktop Dyno somewhere on a usb (or god forbid a floppy disc! hehe). I was going to plug in everything but Cam specs (leave that for last), then look at different cams and valve gear on offer.
Ideally I'd love a roller cam and roller rockers (hydraulic) but it may not all be available or I might have to mix and match.
I want enough power and torque that I can floor the accelerator from a standing start and light up both tyres. Lots of mid range torque should do the trick.

Not a prob Geoff,

The 4.6 camshafts don't have a nose for fitment of the helical gear, so you'll need a 3.9 or similar or go custom and opt for the 4.6 profile on a full length camshaft.

Ron.

If I go custom grind I'd go for something with a bit more of "everything". :)

I'd like to try and use mostly factory pieces but have everything working in sync, so ported heads, matched cam and rockers/lifters etc

Take a look at Crower Buick 215. grinds. Plenty of choice, great quality (better than factory) and low price.
