3500s - jumps out of 3rd on overrun

Evening all,

Just got back from a week in Cornwall, the car ran perfectly for the most part (as expected) and we covered around 800 miles during the 7 days, including the 255 miles home today! Who says classics can't be reliable eh?

Only small niggle was that on some of the steep Cornish descents the car jumped out of 3rd gear a couple of times on overrun.

I have an lt77 in the garage and most of the bits to do the swap, but I also have a wife who is 7 months pregnant with our first child!

So the big question is how long have I got left on this box once it starts behaving the way it is? It selects all gears fine and is ok in all other respects apart from a bit of whining.

Argh!

If the end goal is to fit the LT77 then I'd make sure the 4 speed has oil in it and then treat the box with a bit of respect and you should be OK for a good while, if not you're no worse off than you are now. If it only jumps out of third, and only on the overrun, then don't let it overrun in third....

Can you hold it in third when it wants to jump out?

Thanks for the reply Harvey - once it had done it a couple of times and scared the bejesus out of me as the car took off like a rocket I did keep my hand on the stick and this seemed to help.

I'll be gentle with it and try to make it last a while longer - I'll change the oil too.

Luckily my commute is mostly motorway with no crazy Cornish gradients, so no need for the amount of engine braking i have had to do this week. I guess the total fuel cut the EFI provides probably doesn't help here as it does give you a noticeable boost when using the engine to slow the car. I could turn that off if i had to.

Cheers

Jamie
