Many have. I'm willing to pay someone to to mine as I have no workshop. It won't necessarily give you more power than carbs but it'll give much better throttle response and run a lot cleaner. It should also give better mpg around town.
The system is pretty much self-contained. You can even run it without lambda feedback but you really don't want to do that. Your main issues are with the fuel system as far as I can see. You need a pot under the fuel tank and new lines for the higher ( but not really all that high by EFi standards) pressure fuel lines and you want boses welded into the top of each side of the exhaust for the lambdas.
The speed input doesn't affect the mapping. It does only two things - implements a 112mph limiter for offroad tyres (can be removed in software) and switches between fast and slow idle.
Why would you not want to use the standard Hotwire MAF?
I bought a megasquirt kit from a dealer and just fitted it.
The ECU is a megasquirt 1, no speed sensor, fitted all the parts then made my own wiring loom, the rad is an upgrade which was in the car when I bought it, but the 4L engine was in there already.
