28 MPG on a run - possible?

Out of curiosity, I wanted to work out what MPG I got from my V8 at the weekend, seeing as I'd filled it before we left, and then filled it again before we came back. Travelling down to deepest darkest Cornwall, we didn't really hit any traffic all the way down, so it was cruising, mostly around 70-75 all the way. I've worked out that we did 161.7 miles between the initial fill and then topping it up again in Penzance, with 26.46 litres, or 5.82 gallons of petrol.

This works out at 27.78 mpg, which seems a bit high. I know that there could be a difference between the initial fill and the topping up, I didn't brim it on either occasion, but I wouldn't have thought it would make that much difference. Is this normal? It just seems a bit higher than I'd expect!

I don't know about anyone else but I always find mpg is greatly affected by engine load. on a run like that I would think having a wind blowing from behind would make a difference to having one head on for example. Letting the car find its own speed helps too... ie letting it pick up down hill and slow going up hill. all this makes a big difference to the mpg.

going to my mothers in north west wales from where I live is aprox 400 miles. in my Toyota I can get over 50 mpg to shrewsbury which is over 2/3 of the way but by the time I get to my mothers its dropped down to low to mid 40's because of the constant engine load variations.

It is possible... but surely (the car needs to be level and) the tank needs to be brimmed otherwise how can it be accurate?
I am also assuming its a manual car!

Yes, a 5 speed manual at that. I wasn't going for out and out accuracy, so the actual achieved may be higher or lower, but not by too much. It was just much better than expected!

I've just got 33.5mpg out of Lady C's last tank full :D

When they're running well the V8 and 4 pot can return very respectable fuel consumption figures.

Hi when I ran the p6 as an everyday car in the 80's I always got over 25 mpg around town and 35 on a long run, 4 cylinder models of course, current 2200 Tc is averaging 24 plus urban running so nothing much has changed.

27mpg just now from Manchester to Winslow via Lake View - mostly motorway. This is with a carburetted 4 litre engine and a ZF gearbox. I'm pleased with that - I feathered the throttle all the way instead of driving as if I'd stolen my own car.
