2200TC Project

later edit Just the two behind the aux drive left, I'll get to the rest tomorrow.
Great! Sounds like you're making good headway. There are 3 behind the aux housing. The top and bottom are easy to get from the top and bottom, the middle one is harder. See here for their locations:

That's a lovely job, yes I think I got them all except two. I managed to get the upper one behind the aux. Some weren't even tightened, they all came out easy enough.

And happy to report all are out, with the bigger ones on the support cracked off a tad.

I'm having a bit of trouble removing the 15/16" nuts from the distributor-side water jacket, they are starting to strip, and Geoff doesn't have them.
The nut is quite thin and set against the edge of the jacket, not to mention the stud sticking out. So it's difficult to get anything on it. I gave it a couple of knocks, but it's soft. Any suggestions would be welcome, the engine is off the supports and I don't want to leave it too long!

Not to worry, I got underneath, undid everything in the way and got them off with a spanner. But I do have a question, if anyone's up for it!
Should the water jacket slip over the larger diameter thread and stud? All bolts are out and the two large diameter nuts are off!

Yes I thought about the two nuts, I'll try that! Thanks. I don't think Wins has got them, hope I don't have to use a wrench!

Help! I tried the double Nut technique and the inner one has stripped, it's spinning on the stud. Major problem. Assistance please!

Weld something to it, and just use brute force..

That's a good idea Chris! I was going to buy a Stillson tomorrow, see if that works first. Does the smaller threaded portion come out of the larger section, or does the whole thing come out? I was afraid it was going to snap off.

Here is a photo of the 2 different special bolts on the side plates from my 2000.. I am assuming that the 2200 ones are the same and you are struggling with the one shown on the left side of the photo. The bolt portion is one piece with the nut as a separate part. It took me some work to remove the nut. You can see the damage to the threads on the right hand bolt from removing the nut. I sourced a couple of replacements from JRW.Side Plate special fasteners.jpg

Yes they appear the same, thanks DAK. What did you use ?

I used an angled box end wrench on the large nut and a smaller one on the double nuts with some penetrating oil under the large nut and turning together, I was able to thread the assembly out of the block. More penetrating oil and the 2 nuts locked together allowed me to get the large nut from the bolt. One was damaged beyond repair due to the galled threads for the large nut but I was able to source a used one from JRW.

Very pleased, thanks for your replies gents. Gentle persuasion over time rather than leaning on it.

Well done! A classic example of a 30 minute job turning into a 2 week ordeal. Sorry to see you had such trouble with. Hopefully all plain sailing from here

Now stick them back in, reattach the engine mount, and walk away for a bit to let all the gunk inside dry out..
Good advice. I did this (out of accident (laziness) rather than design) when I rebuilt my first engine, and found it a lot easier to get the caked gunk out once it had dried a bit.

I'm just about to put the water-jacket back on, with the new gasket. Should I use a smear of Liquid Sealant also or not?
