2200tc gearbox leak

Hi folks,
have a leak running down the joint between front face of gearbox and rear of belhousing on left hand side. Any ideas? Selectors maybe?

Best wishes

There is a gasket that could be leaking, although that's not common. There is a breather hole in the top cover which if blocked could cause leaks. There is also a detent cover gasket and rubber plug on the top cover.

I think you would struggle to get at the breather hole in-situ, it might just be possible though, same with the detent cover gasket, but the time it would take it would be quicker to remove the box, and if it is the bellhousing to main case gasket then the box definitely needs to come out to replace that.

PS If you haven't already done so I suggest you powerwash the area throughly then dry it all off and run/drive the car to try to get a more accurate idea where the leak is coming from.

I assume that by Left hand side you mean passenger side (RHD)

Hi Harvey, will do! leak is on the passenger side; no leak on the other side at all. Will let you know after a clean and run. Thanks for your help.

Whats the accepted method of gearbox removal on the 4cyls now? When I had one I was advised......remove fan, red hoses etc, disconnect throttle at rear etc, remove vertical engine mount bolts, replace with long screwdrivers, disconnect exhaust and prop shaft, and pivot engine rearwrds around the screwdrivers. Might need to remove gearlever, getting a bit hazy now. Anyway, at this angle you should be able to get at the top of the box.

No need to remove the fan, just make sure the blades are horizontal, slacken top hose at the rad, don't touch the engine mounting bolts, remove the gearlever, other than that and quite a few other things job's a good 'un.

Hi Harvey,
I now know the issue; all four gearbox to bellhousing bolts are loose and spinning so the gasket is hardly being compresed letting the fluid through. Bad news is with the nuts inside the bellhousing the box will have to come out.
If I were to drop/lower the box would I be able to access and tighten the nuts without going to whole hog of removing the it completely?
Daft question; apologies in advance.
I know the gearbox to bellhousing gasket was replaced by previous owner, guess the bolts weren’t torqued up correctly........

Thinking about it, a 2200TC is a bit easier because the throttle is a cable so no linkage to disconnect.

Small win but I’ll take it! Any other top tips for a 2200 tc? I’ve read the gearbox removal thread.......
Best wishes

If you're replacing that bellhousing to main case gasket I take it that you know that you can't just undo the bellhousing and remove it to replace the gasket.

Undo the 6 casing bolts around the clutch withdrawal housing inside the bellhousing as well I thought? Just wanting to seperate bell housing from box the replace the gasket.........

'Fraid not. You can actually leave the release housing in place. To get to the gasket you want to change the first thing you need to remove is the rear flange, then start dismantling forwards from there......
