1972 3500S P6B Power Steering Installation

Hmm bit of dilemma today. Once I had installed the pump mounting bracket (which required the engine to be lifted an inch or two to get lowermost set pin inserted). All went well fitting the pump and crank pulley etc, however as can be seen the belt alignment is way off. Can anyone tell me if there are different crank pulley types as I have seen one in another thread that seems to have a spacer section on it compared to mine. If mine had the spacer section then perhaps the belt would line up much closer? The crank pulley came with the pump and steering gear so I assume it is of a set from one vehicle. Anyone care to comment on the pulley I have fitted?

Heres a photo of another members crank pulley showing a gap between pulleys and the power steering belt groove nearer towards the timing cover which I think will help alignment on mine?

There are different auxilliary crank pulleys, and if you include Land/Range Rover ones as well as P5B/P6B there are quite a few. Your one isn't correct, the P6B one is offset by about 1" and fitting that will bring your belt into line.

Ok thanks for the feedback. Hopefully I can find a correct pulley or the necessary adaption to fit.

The good news. :) I have sourced and fitted the correct pulley from Graham (user Penguin) at Ely Service.

The bad news. The high pressure hose just burst, lots of oil everywhere, yes it was looking tired after many years use no doubt, I should have known better, I mean it was only stamped 1972 manufacture . Perhaps a good job it happened during the installation rather than the open road. Oh well a new replacement has now been ordered from Wadhams. Hope the new one last the same time?

Well I fitted the new high pressure hose, disappointingly it needed a bit a bending at the pump end to clear the chassis, but all is fitted and running now. However after bleeding and driving some miles now to bed it in, I find have an issue that if I turn hard lock either way I get a screeching which sounds like the belt is slipping. I have rechecked the tension of the belt and it as per the Rover workshop manual. I'm tempted to put a little more tension on the belt, but don't want to damage the pump. Is the screeching on hard lock typical with power steering and something that I'll just have to get used to?

You shouldn't be suffering the screeching. If the belt is the correct profile then I'd tighten it up some more. I can't say I've ever looked at the tensioning requirements in the WM, I just make sure they're nice and tight. A new belt will always go looser after some use.

Well some months later after tightening up the belt and letting it settle in I still get screeching if I hit hard lock both ways. Have tried bleeding system a few times but find no air present, and no loss of oil. Before the installation I completely rebuilt the power steering unit and followed the workshop manual carefully obtaining the correct torque readings upon assembly, hence I am confident with this unit itself.

I also rebuilt the pump itself before installation with a new bronze bush and genuine ball bearing. I can only think that the oil pressure control piston and spring is perhaps suspect, ie if the spring were weak it would allow high pressure to drop but this would mean it was less likely to slip the belt ? On the other hand if the pump relieve valve piston was jamming and pressure was higher than normal then perhaps the belt would slip especially on full lock ?

The best thing would probably be to hook up a pressure gauge to establish what is going on. Does anyone have one the same as shown in the workshop manual by any chance they would loan or sell ?

One final observation on the installation, and perhaps its telling me something here. I don't feel there is too much advantage to it compared to the original mechanical steering, I was expecting more assistance TBH.

Hi, If you mean when it get to full lock/end of its travel then TADTS. Just don't hold it there for too long.

The screech is quite unsettling even for a brief moment on full lock and is not representative of the cars condition, sounds more like an old banger.

Sorry, TADTS ?

Following the information supplied by Harvey for the nut I churned out these tonight and the extractor works a treat too. Although I deviated slightly instead of 3/4" A/F on the nut head, I used a A/F 15/16 UNF bolt head and shank as the start for the special nut, also a UNF fine thread on the extractor itself which I believe is better than a coarse thread for this purpose.
Would you concider making me a nut and posting it to Aussie?

Right had a decent thaw today so bravely ventured into the shed and churned our one of these ready to post.
Almost identical to Harvey’s dimensions apart from the flats of the nut which are slightly larger 15/16” A/F, but you are still able to get into the space to tighten it up no problem
Please supply name and address, email and perhaps contact number via pm.

Thank you so so much, It's arrived and I've fitted it. It fits like a glove.
