1972 3500 auto (another rat look Rover)

Hey everyone. Here's my late '72 3500 auto, been in the family since 1978. She's fitted with an SD1 5 speed and electric steel sunroof. She has the early high compression engine with later Hif6 carbs and electronic ignition kit. Plus a series 1 grille and boot lid..and a black leather interior (which has been unbelievably hot lately!). I recently sprayed her in Red oxide primer as I can't afford a good paint job just yet, and needed something to hid the nasty faded red/pink paint. I was sick of all the negative comments about the paintwork :oops: , so went for a rat look (for now). I also painted the bumpers as the chrome was a mess and I can't afford a re-chrome. I know she won't be to everyones taste but please be kind! :LOL:

:LOL: we've had a couple of recent heavy downpours and it seems pretty waterproof so far

I like the red oxide satin look on the body :D It works really well with those wheels
Undecided on the bumper choice..for me they'd be better without the overriders on the front
But very glad you went body coloured on your custom grill nose!

I quite like it Will. Like the Drumstick card on the mirror and especially like the space hopper tax disc holder :D .

Don't know if it's just my imagination but the rat look seems to be quite popular these days - sort of "rat renaissance" thing going on? I suppose that spraying the panels and bumpers freshens up your car and will protect it so that you can always do a more conventional paint job if you want to in the future.

I intend to paint the car british racing green eventually. I have some good spare panels put to one side so I can work on them individually, then replace bit by bit. The 'rat' look is just to keep the car looking reasonably tidy (or untidy :LOL: ) until the 'proper' painted panels go on. I had nothing to loose with the bumpers, as the chrome was shot. I do have a decent, presentable spare 'chrome' set though, which I will put on when the final paint is done. I'm happy enough with the red oxide look for now, I almost went down the grey primer route but glad I didn't. The paint underneath is red enamel (from when my Dad painted it) so the red oxide worked pretty well with that as a 'base coat'.

The 'drumstick' card is an air freshener, and it smells very nice! 8) :D . They do a set of them in 4 different retro sweet scents:
