1971 P6B Breaking for spares

Hi all,

The front NS of the car decided today it didnt want to be part of the car anymore, and has collapsed to the point where the front wheel moves about 5-6 inches forward and back in every drive gear, and has fractured and ripped the chassis that much its broken the steering idler and jammed the throttle wide open. The front NS basically is Irrepairable.

As it was bought as a daily driver, and now isnt one...it has to go! I'd sell it whole, but I wouldnt get the £550 its cost me so far back, so im stripping it for spares>

Anyway, what it is -

1971 P6B
Tax free, registered as a historic vehicle, and MOT'd and taxed for around 6 months. It runs well, no funny noises or smoke, starts up good and gets off choke quickly. It can be heard running by anyone interested, and i'll show you it moves, but only a foot forwards, cos it'll just drop to pieces if i try more! :D

Its just had a full service, dizzy cap, rotor arm, air filters, breather filter, flame traps etc, and has new plugs, leads and oil filter ready to go in!

Has mint front wings, V8 valance and NADA bonnet, all in primer so ready to paint whatever colour you want, or ideal spares for the future.

Absolutely everything available from the whole car, its all gotta go and its all quite cheap. Whatever isnt sold by the end of April is going to get weighed in

PM me or ring 07936 298 532. Smaller parts im willing to post at cost, larger bits collection from Chesterfield.

Cheers,
Phil

The car is The yellowy beigy colour, and the interior is the same. I'll get some photos in the morning! If im honest, the seats are a bit dead, the stitching is coming apart and the leather is old. I have a set of covers though, and the door cards and carpets are good! :D

Unfortunately yes! Ive done 450 miles in the car, and to be fair to Chris, he described it exactly as it was. The rust was badly covered using sealer, filler and underseal...i guess the regular use its been getting have just losened it all up a bit!

Get back in touch with him! The car is in MOT, that will give you a strong bargaining position. I am sure Chris will not see you wrong over this ... just be thankful you were not doing 70 on the motorway.

I would if i knew who to get back in touch with...It was already MOT'd when Chris bought it, he did nothing more than park it on his drive, so i cant really blame Chris for the rust..nor would i as he's been really helpful with holding the car, sorting parts etc....

The person to blame would be whoever troweled it full of filler, bathroom sealer, newspaper and underseal to cover the massive crack and corrosion in the chassis leg, the non-existant shocker and bottom arm mounts, and the hole in the bulkhead i could fit my head through! :D

I cant say im not annoyed, but more at myself for buying another cheap classic again, rather than fixing the ones Ive got!

He must know who he bought it off of ..... similarly if you explain to Chris what has happened, I am sure he will see you alright, as I cannot imagine he would have KNOWINGLY sold you such a dangerous car. I bet he will compensate you a little.

Maybe its worth a shot... Im glad that the car failed over a period of time, and finally gave up the ghost while parking it in the Unit today, rather than like you said, on the motorway at 70! We'll see what happens....

Phil.
Please post a pic or 3 of the collapsed area?
I am sure it will be possible to find out who did this unforgivable life risking botch job! Maybe the mot was dodgy as well?
Am sure chris will do all he can to assist!!

I will do, as soon as the wing is off tomorrow and its up in the air, i'll get some Photos!

What really gets me is, whoever bodged it could have spent the same amount of time and effort doing it right!

Phil,

Just sent you a PM.. I really am sorry. As I said, I drove her down from Scotland last August, and she hadn't been MoT'd for long. The MoT paperwork should be in the file I gave you. The only advisory was that one of the fibreglass wings wasn't secure, but I fixed that when I put the steel ones on.

I don't know what the legalities are of going after the place that MoT'd the car? I wonder if you could take them to small claims court for the cost of the car?

Chris

Like i said in my PM mate, its really not worth it! With the time it would take, and the messing around involved, i might as well sell what i can, and admit defeat on this one! Lol, you've seen the back garden, Ive plenty more projects to keep me busy!

This kind of thing is bound to happen with a car that is 38 years old...its just life

Still, gives me an excuse to have a look on ebay again! :p

I say this regularly with welding (or should have been) and various lashes I uncover.
Makes you wonder what some people are thinking

Hi, Speedy. Sorry to hear about your issue with your P6, it happens to the best of us eventually (even me!!).
Not wanting to be a damp squib, but with regard to trying to get some joy/compensation from the garage who MOT'd the car, i don't think you will have much luck. VOSA state that when an MOT test is being carried out, that the vehicle will pass if it is "roadworthy at the time of the inspection". This means for example, that a road spring could fail as soon as you leave the test station, with no comeback to the MOT station. Also the MOT tester can only test the parts of a vehicle that he can safely access with no dismantling & using only a small corrosion assessment tool to prod & tap structural areas. If the chassis/structure has been bodged in such a way that it looks & feels ok, then it will pass the test. Also testers are under pressure to perform as many MOT tests as poss, so they cannot afford to scrutinise all parts of the structure for any length of time. In reality, i have also seen cars that have just been MOT'd & wondered how they managed to get through the test.
P.s. i do not work for VOSA, but do know their standards & procedures that they work to very well.
Glen.

The above isn't strictly true, most of the test is indeed only an indication of the condition at the time of the test, but if you find mechanical faults shortly afterwards you can put in a complaint to VOSA, as it will be reasonably obvious that an excess of wear couldn't happen within such a short time, but the problem with this is that parts can be substituted with good ones just for the test, and changed back afterwards, tyres being a prime example. The car in question here however has severe structural corrosion, and for that you have 3 months from the date of the test to make your complaint. If the car is within 3 months of the test date then it would be worth making a complaint, particularly in view of just how serious the consequenses of this failing when braking hard at 70mph. My guess is that someone made a good job of hiding the corrosion, and the tester failed to notice it.

What you say about testers being under pressure to carry out as many tests as possible doesn't apply now either, since the introduction of the computerised system where they can only log one test every (IIRC) 45 minutes, the system doesn't allow for any more.

What Harvey says is correct about the 3 month window for corrosion unless they've changed it of late. A friend of mine swapped his car for a smart looking 2.8i Capri a few years back. I looked it over after he did his secret deal and came round to impress us all and he wasn't best pleased. My mate, not wanting trouble swapped it with a car I had and I took his car back to where the MOT was done and sold it to them (too far gone for them to repair, even if I'd trust others work) for £1100. this was after swapping wheels and the nice radio it had in it  Was a good deal for me
I went to the station not VOSA and they did this to conserve their licence and save further embarressment. Personally I think it was a friend of the testers and it looked great from 10feet away and never entered the testing bay. Who knows?
If Speedy can make his money back in parts though, he may not want the hassle :)
