1969 (soon to be) 2000ti TURBO INJECTION!

they are mounted on eyelets bolted into the rear seatbelt mounts as it didnt have seatbelts in the back it should be ok for mot. and i modified the old front seatbelts to work in the back too.
 
Sounds pretty good, I've seen too many people bolt the straight down to the floor behind the seat, only to see the seat fold in half in a crash !
 
yeh that would be no good the pass one probably isn't in an ideal as the angle is quite steep with the seat in its current position but with the seat further forward it should be ok.

I got the engine mounts attached to the engine today after welding them up last night.

they are bolted to the engine but the other part is not attached to the chassis yet untill im 100% sure where the engine will sit with the gearbox in place.

also been looking at a front mount intercooler or fmic to be down with the lingo of ebay for £65 its 550mm by 140 so should sit quite nicely in the bottom grill but im in two minds wheather its a little too bright and will stand out too much so my spray it black and maybe even leave a silver ''tolson motorsport'' as a bit of a laugh.

i dont know if i should use black hoses or coloured hoses for the ones you can see :?
 
Good work so far. With the intercooler, if you're going to fit it behind a V8 valance that looks standard I'd paint it black and use black hoses to completely hide it. However, if you're going to cut the grill out of the opening on the V8 valance the have it silver with coloured hoses to make a show of it.
 
i just cant work out if i should make it a bit of a sleeper or let people know its quick before they see it move.

right im going to paint it black with the black hoses so its not noticeable from the outside then switch to colouered hoses under the bonnet but still undecided as to what colour they will be.
 
I'm much more into sleepers! Adds to the astonishment, especially if bystanders have been making rude comments before they see it take off!

well we are brewing two sleepers here now so it should be a good laugh when traveling in convoy to shows.
anybody got any ideas on how i can spin the intake side and the centre part of my turbo round 180 degrees i just cant seem to budge it.
 
Definitely a vote for the discreet sleeper look from me.

Can't help you on the turbo though as I've not mucked about with one before. I know they are meant to be able able to rotate, but they must be well sealed to cope with the pressure and extreme temperature, perhaps there's some sort of sealant bonding it together?
 
From what I've read you just slacken off the bolts and rotate it, but there's a good chance it will be siezed, you may need to tap it with a hammer to get it free.

Another 1 for the sleeper look, although a big fmic does look cool :LOL:
 
Yes i've done it now I took it completly off using a blow torch and a fibre hammer

and then after 2 and a half hours of fighting with a massive circlip and got the intake side off so i could spin that to a more convenient position

i have rebuilt it all now with a couple of clearance issues such as the 10mm bolt holding the wastegate actuator on is pretty close to the big water pipe boss ( dont know if its return or feed) and ive had to shorten one of the bolts that hold the oil fall pipe on to be able to get it in.
 
bought and mounted the intercooler it was pretty simple using a couple of lengths of threaded rod and a length of bar. The threaded rod is going from the pannel beneth the slam pannel to the bosses on top of the intercooler, and the bar is attached to the captive nut on the x-member where the engine steady bar used to be bolted and then to one of the bosses underneath the intercooler to keep it steady.

I haven't painted it black but i'm not sure i will have to as it is fairly discreet as it is behined the grill in the valance and your eyes are drawn to that not the intercooler.

money spending will have to stop for a while as i owe my dad a bit so going to have to pay that of before any big spends on silicon hoses and stuff like that.
 
That looks cool, and it's quite big, certainly bigger than the standard 600/800 one, should really help keep charge temps down.

It would probably be more obvious if the car was a dark colour, but as you say it's quite descrete back there, just looks like an ally radiator.

I'm not a fan of brightly coloured silicone hoses, much prefer to use black ones (although suppliers don't often sell black), but depends what sort of under-bonnet look your going for.

Hope there's a few things you can be doing without extra funds, I'm enjoying this project ! :LOL:
 
I made a couple of bits of tube today to match the exhaust manifold to turbo ports.

and then i will need to get a u-bend and flanges made to weld these bits to, to relocate the turbo.

(the shaded bits are the tubes above.)
The u-bend will be heat wrapped aswell as the down pipe.
Which brings me to the next hurdle, the back part of the turbo that the down pipe bolts on to, as now the down pipe is very much an up pipe as you can imagine since i've turned the back of the turbo 180 degrees

Heres a photo where the back part of the turbo is still attached.
as this part is cast i dont know if it can be cut and welded it would be a tricky operation and would have to be done by a pro.

I'm not sure what colour hoses i will be using yet i may just go with black as the two off the intercooler will be black anyway.

Has anyone got a 3500s rad going free or close to free near wales or leeds?
 
Thinking slightly laterally, could you not make the extension bring the turbo forward in the bay to where it opens up at the front, rather than lifting it up, that way you could keep it in roughly standard orientation.

I've seen the yanks do something similar on the V8's where there's just no room at the sides.

I know this one is a bit extreme but you get the idea !

You can always make a custom manifold.
 
On second thoughts I've just remembered the location of the pas/water pumps and alternator, right in the way !

How about making a custom exhaust manifold to put the turbo behind the alternator at roughly the same level ? (or at least exactly where you want it) It's not as hard as it sounds and could solve all your problems in one go.

Alternatively I have seen a turbo fitted in the exhaust tailpipe area (no kidding !) and apparently they even work right back there ! :LOL:
 
it will be just behined the alt but slightly higher to make it posible to run a boost type pipe over the top of the alt for the air filter and the boost pipe to the intercooler will go under the alt. i cant see it being any simpler making a manifold than making a U-bend and a couple of flanges as i would effectivly have to have 4 90degree peices and one big flange and one small flange or five small flanges anyway. :?:
I cant wait to get it done ive been out on a couple of test drives in impreza rally cars today and cant wait to have a turbo :mrgreen:
 
Sounds good, the only problem I can see then is rotating that exhaust outlet, I'm not sure you can effectively cut and weld cast iron, you may have to make a replacement flange and elbow yourself from steel, similar to your u bend.

It's going to be a fun drive !

Another option for the exhaust manifold is to use an aftermarket tubular manifold like the one's for the Nissan S14/S15 Silvia's. From browsing the Rovertech forum, it appears they can be adapted to fit the t-series lump and sit the turbo in a very similar position to the stock cast iron log manifold. The cunning plan would then be to rotate it through 180 degrees and have the turbo mounted on top next to the head. The exhaust should then exit torwards the rear and possibly follow an s bend to clear the starter motor.

As they appear to have similar head/turbo flange alignment, you could try holding you're standard log manifold against the head upside down and hold the turbo in place to see if it would fit roughly in that area :wink: . A search on Google and Ebay for Nissan turbo manifolds and engines should give you an idea of how they're fitted.
 
i have thought about getting a flange machined for the back of the turbo but its not that simple because of the complex shape inside the original part due to the indent for the waste gate and down pipe but i would like to have a nice fast flowing one that looks pretty but i would have to get it made and i dont really have the money at the moment. im just doing it on the cheap at the moment untill i know everything is ok and then upgrade it slowly.

as for the nissan idea i think if i turned my exhaust manifold upside down i would think that the turbo would be very high up, but i will have a look.
