    No Spark

1975 V8 auto. I can't get a spark at all. I have fuel. I've changed the cap, leads and plugs. I've tried new points and condenser, and both my spare powerspark units. The engine spins well on the starter. Strange things, I have 12 volts at the coil but when the engine is cranking the volts drop...

    More SU carb woes

I finally got the car started at weekend only to see petrol overflowing from the nearside carb again. I stripped it and reset the float very carefully and cleaned all the insides. Car runs for a few minutes and then floods again. Both carbs were rebuilt using new floats and rebuild kits several...

    Starter trouble

I've had my V8 automatic for 4 years with not too many troubles til now. The car has not started for a while. Completed dead starter circuit. All the lights, horn, wipers and so on work so I started looking. The Starter solenoid has been bodged at some time so decide to replace it. Still...

    More carb needle queries

I have HIF6s on my 75 V8 auto. The needles in at the moment are old BBV needles. I have a brand new old stock pair of BCPs. What's the difference and will they work on the V8? I'll probably treat it to new jets too. It's only running on one carb so is undrivable at the moment. They are back of...

    Fire

I just read a post which mentioned a fire problem. In the summer I'd be doing various jobs on car ouside on the driveway. Replacement electric fuel pump and work on the carbs. When I started the car there was a bump under the bonnet which luckily was open. A perished fuel hose had leaked and a...

    Rough running V8

My P6 V8 is running rough and I can't get to the bottom of it. I've changed the plugs, leads, distributor and cap, it has new powerspark ignition. The carbs have been rebuilt with new jet kits, floats and bi metal jet adjusters. I've set them up to book settings. It starts straight away and...

    Sticky carb float

The carbs on my V8 were rebuilt a year ago and have been ok since until......it's been standing a week or 6. And starting it today the nearside carb poured petrol on the drive. I stripped and cleaned out the carb, but no change. The float is sticking and I can't see why. I tried it without the...

    Decker seal

I have a new decker seal to replace the grotty old one. Does the decker panel have to come off to fit a new seal? Hopefully that and a new boot seal will cure the wet boot! Thanks

    Front shock absorbers

I've just bought some Armstrong shock absorbers for my 1975 3500 automatic. They were listed for a 2200 but I was assured they would fit a 3500. My question is this: Is the lower pin fitting on the body a different size between the 2200 and 3500? The sock absorbers I have seem to have smaller...

    V8 exhaust silencer

I have a P6 3500 and will soon be replacing exhausts. Has anyone done one with just one silencer at the back? What would be the drawbacks or advantages {apart from cost!) I don't mind the V8 soundtrack being a little louder. Any ideas would be welcome. John

    front suspension

I have replaced the bushes on the nearside front suspension on my 1975 3500 automatic. The only part I replaced is the lower link. The front wheel now sits further forward and catches the front wing. My question is this. Is the lower link a different length from the 3500 to the 2000/2200? What...

New Distributor, won't run for long

Hi again. The V8 now has its new electronic distributor. I've checked the timing as best I can. Cleaned out the fuel filter in the electric pump. It has new plugs. There's fuel flowing into the fuel filter. It starts reluctantly, runs for 30 seconds or so then stops and doesn't want to start...

    Distributor query

I have a horrible feeling I know the answer to this......My distributor has done around 100,000 miles. It still works, sort of. There are new plugs in the car but there's still a hesitation on gentle throttle openings. The vacuum advance doesn't work at all. I've attached a vacuum pump to it and...

    Vinyl Roof

I have removed the vinyl roof on my V8 as it was badly torn. Under the vinyl is a painted roof which I might just keep as it is. The question is, does anyone recommend anything to remove all the adhesive without damaging the paint too much? Thanks, John

    Heater fan wiring

Another heater fan question. I've just overhauled the heater box on a V8 automatic. The fan will now only run on one speed, with the control lever 2/3 of the way down. If you push the lever all the way down the fan stops running. The question is, is it the wiring at the fan or a fault with the...

    Screen seal and heater

I've taken the heater out to refurb it and the lower screen seal has rotted away. My question is......do I have to undo the screen jacks to fit a new lower seal? Will the screen stay in place while I do this? Anything I ought to know before I tackle this job? Luckily I've caught this before...

    V8 Water pump

I've just removed the radiator and fan blades and noticed and sort slight rubbing noise from the water pump. It spins freely and water comes out of a hose so it's not seized....but not silent either. Any ideas please? Thanks

    Heater box overhaul

I'm about to take out the heater on my V8 to overhaul it. (While I do the cam and lifters!) I've read that a Metro heater blower is a good replacement. Any particular year of Metro or are they all much the same? I can find one from an 84-90 model. Thanks

    WANTED: P6 ROOF PANEL

Has anyone got a spare roof panel to offer? I want to put new vinyl on and change mine. Thought it would be easier to have one all ready just to swap over. Thanks John, Stockport

    Inhibitor switch again?

I've just had my P6 V8 off the road for a while as I was sorting the brakes....again. I also looked at why the reversing lights didn't work, checking connection on the inhibitor switch. Now it won't start at all. Nothing, not even a click. Everything else works with the ignition on, but it's...

    P6 Brake reservoir

Hello. I'm looking for a brake fluid reservoir for my V8 P6. The lid and internal parts are the bits I need most. The aluminium cylinder has all disintegrated on mine. Many thanks John

    Boot lid won't stay up

The boot lid on my P6 rarely stays open. I've taken to using an old walking stick to keep it open. Are the springs on the hinges adjustable? Or do they need replacing? The walking stick works but is not a good image really! Thanks John

    Speedo under reading

I've had the car for almost a year now and still can't work out why the speedo under reads by quite a large margin. At a true 30mph (Via satnav) the speedo reads 24. It's only vaguely accurate at about 60. The tyres are the standard 185 x 14. Is it just a case of changing the speedo? Thanks John
