    Cylinder head interchangeability?

Are all P6 V8 heads the same? Can I replace my 1973 car’s near side head with a near side head off a 1970 engine? I think the compression ratios are different on the early engines, will this matter?

    BW35 rear mounting

my rear mounting is pretty soft and there is lots of movement so I intend to replace is using the MGBD spares poly option. What however are the consequences of not replacing it? In the meantime, will it cause problems? Will it start knocking or cause driveline alignment problems or torque...

    Crank rear oil seal replacement

My bellhousing is leaking engine oil so I’d like to replace the rear crank seal. I did this job on my previous P6 but that was easier as the engine was out and receiving a full rebuild. my first question is whether my car will have a rope or a lip seal? It’s a 1974 V8 manual. My second question...

    Fuel issue

I recently finished some recommissioning of a 1974 V8 manual. On it’s first test run, it broke down, there was no fuel in the filter. I managed to crank it and get it running and limped home. On the next run it misfired but didn’t break down. I left the car in the garage for a month or two until...

    VIN number enquiry

My 1970 V8 has a correct VIN plate on the inner wing that ends in G. However the V5 chassis/frame number end in an F. All the numbers are correct though. Is this a clerical error at DVLA? The engine number matches perfectly.

    Question regarding identity

There’s a red 1974 2200tc resto project for sale on eBay. Advert link below. The number plate has been blanked out but If you zoom in, it seems to read VYX 731M This comes up as a Wolseley in red. It’s not simply a make error as the cc Is listed as 2227, not the rover’s 2204cc. What do you...

    Wipers not working

I’m restoring a 1974 V8 manual. It’s been off the road a good while and I’m working through electrical problems. The wipers and motor don’t work at all. (It’s not a linkage problem). I started by checking the security of the switch connections, fuse etc which checked out ok. When I investigated...

    P6 3500s clutch/gearbox noise

I’m in the process of rescuing a 1974 v8s that’s not been used for some years. I got the engine running today without too many problems and bled the clutch. It selects gears fine and I even managed to get it moving under its own power, and got into 2nd gear on the driveway. There is a noise...

    Brake pad wear wires

Sorry it may be in the wrong section - brakes or electrics?! Quick question really. What will happen if the electrics for the pad wear wires are not connected up? Is it just a case that the warning light will not illuminate once the pads wear down or will it upset the operation of the light for...

    Coolant in v8 inlet manifold

My 1970 V8 has had an intermittent misfiring problem which is making the car undriveable. If I go for a drive, within seconds it will misfire. If I rerun home, and allow it to idle of a couple of minutes it clears and revs from idle very smoothly until I take it down the road again. When the...

    Another tapping V8

My 1970 v8 has only done 200 miles since having a new cam, timing gear, followers and push rods. After running in the cam, All has been well until recently when I’ve been getting a tapping noise that increases with engine revs. This occurs when the engine is warm and lasts for a minute or so...

    Inoperative rear calliper

my 1970 V8 had a full brake overhaul 18months ago. This included reconditioned callipers all round, new pads all round, reconditioned servo and new brake master cylinder. 2200 - is this an interference engine?

Does anyone know the answer to this? I know the V8 is an interference engine but is the 4 cyl? Basically, if the timing chain broke, do valves and pistons collide? Or is it a non interference engine where these components never occupy the same space?

V8 oil pressure after crank regrind.

I've had my crank reground and fitted the correct size new main and big end bearings. It's all back together now and I've attempted to prime the oil pump by turning the oil pump drive clockwise through the distributor hole. I've used this method before very successfully but on this occasion it...

    Nasty knocking/tapping noise

I recently removed my v8 engine to replace the rear crank rope oil seal. I removed the big end shells, main bearing caps and crank to do the job properly. There were some signs of wear on the bearings but the engine ran a treat so I didn't replace anything, except the rope seal. It's now back in...

    V8 crank rear rope seal

I need to replace my rope seal. The engine is out to make things a little easier. Rimmer list a rear rope seal kit as shown in the photo. Wadhams don't list a kit but just a rear seal. This contains only the two rope pieces, without the other 2 rubber strips and the nail looking things. My...

My series 1 v8 - rear rope seal advise!

This is my series 1 v8 - a bit if history before I pose my question if that's ok? I bought it a couple of years ago after the car having been off the road since 1983. I planned to do the mechanical work including top end engine overhaul (cam, timing gear, pushrods, lifters, real steel high...
