My Vitesse wheels fit ok. I did have to adjust the d post, but that was more to do with the 205 tyres than the wheel.

Try rocking the car backwards and forwards in a high gear, that may free it up if it's jammed. Check also the engine earth strap. If that's loose, it will affect the starter in the manner you have described.
