Thanks everyone.Carburettors now refurbished and refitted.Much better than it was but still has slight backfire.Diagnosed as faulty distributor.Have just got a new distributor with electronic ignition from Simon BBC.Fingers crossed this will sort it.

I will be buying a new one so thanks for the reply.Had a misfire on the car and when I checked the coil it was chipped around the top and looks quite old so I think a new one would solve the problem.
All sorted now.Thanks for all the help.Actually found a mechanic who removed the manifold.Located the cracks and welded them up.Now sounds sweet.
He said he thoroughly enjoyed working on the car although his heart was in his mouth in case he snapped anything .
