Yep it's a Borg Warner 78 diff I'm pretty sure. Will look at Heatseeker, cheers.

    I'm thinking you're right.

Had a look under the car and it's a 3.89:1, so that's marginally better. I agree, it will need to go on the list of eventually stuff to do!

Hmm, I was hoping it was about 3K. The different ratio may become a matter of more urgency lol. Have to get something to power the diff first, though.

Storing an engine for a while – what do I need to do to protect it?

I believe some people recommend ATF down the bores? I think making sure the coolant channels are dry would be 1st priority. long, long, term maybe back off the rockers? I don't really know, I'm just spreading old-wives-tales I've heard....

    Australian Camshaft questions.

Unfortunately yes, lol. But I'll contend with the rear end after I've got the front end sorted. I may see if I can get a taller gearset during the build...

    Australian Camshaft questions.

FWIW that Crow cam is nearly identical to the Dynotech 217D, (which is the second cam I mentioned) and they refer to it as a 'stage 2' in their catalogue. When you say 'genuine' do you mean as a stock item or have there been dramas with non-genuine cams?

And this engine will be in a Mk2 Cortina (about 950kg), with 4.1 gears (I'll eventually go taller, but that's a story for another time) :)

    Will 4.0/4.6 heads fit on a 3.5?

I got two sets of tin head gaskets as part of the job-lot I bought....looks like a sign, to me lol.

    Will 4.0/4.6 heads fit on a 3.5?

That is an option - but with the 4.6 heads and stock pistons it will be a touch over 9:1 which is just fine, and the more I think about it the more likely this will be the plan.

Mostly cruising around the local hills/ranges with the odd 'spirited' run. Scaring the occasional modern car at the lights.

    Will 4.0/4.6 heads fit on a 3.5?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the technical info. At the moment I guess I have two options - rebuild the 8.13:1 with tin gaskets or rebuild the 9.75:1 with composite gaskets. The 8.13:1 is in much better condition internally (some black flaking but no sludge - can still see hone marks in the bores...

    Will 4.0/4.6 heads fit on a 3.5?

I wonder if fitting the 4.6 heads with a tin gasket will mean I need to shim the rockers....?

    Australian Camshaft questions.

Hi cam guru's - I mentioned this in my 4.6 head thread but I thought I'd start a new cam-shaft related thread as most of the cams mentioned in other threads here are UK or USA based manufactures. I've got nothing against that but in this time of slow/unreliable freight I'm only looking at cams...

    Will 4.0/4.6 heads fit on a 3.5?

    I don't have a CR in mind....just more than 8.13:1 lol.

    Will 4.0/4.6 heads fit on a 3.5?

Cheers. I'm going to replace the cam and lifters as it looks worn and is easier to do while the engine is out. So is there much difference in these cams, they're the two I've been recommended by my local LandRover specialist: PARts B2v4 PARts B2v4 In summary the engine will be an '85 3.5L...

    Will 4.0/4.6 heads fit on a 3.5?

I'm getting a bit confused with the advice here and other forums (my fault, no one elses). If they have the composite gaskets they remain the same compression on a 3.9/4.0/4.6 but if I use them on a 3.5 (1985) with a tin gasket there'll be a compression bump of about .6? That's really the only...

    Will 4.0/4.6 heads fit on a 3.5?

If I get them I'll probably put them on a 1985 8.13:1 engine I have here. Should be a good upgrade, no?

    Will 4.0/4.6 heads fit on a 3.5?

Old-mate locally selling a reconditioned set. Cheaper than getting my heads reco'd, if they will fit ok to the 9.75:1 engine I've been talking about?

What do you think you would sell sets for? It sounds like there's a market.

What can you tell me from this engine number....?

This engine (if sound for rebuild) will be going into my Cortina - so there's a bunch of paperwork to do anyway, but changing from one engine# (as long as they're the same type) to another is a simple form here. The engine is really filthy inside and now I have the intake off I can see that the...

What can you tell me from this engine number....?

I cleaned it up a bit. My photo was still crappy (old phone) but there is no 8. Would it be possible the block was decked and restamped? The engine number does look more 'legit' than the CR.

What can you tell me from this engine number....?

Quick and dodgy phone photo. Will take a better one when I start de-crudding. I wasn't expecting a stamping conflict otherwise I would have cleaned it better before taking the pic. Granted the 7 appears to have been struck harder than the rest but I can't see any evidence of a 3 under it....I'm...

What can you tell me from this engine number....?

The stamping doesn't appear to be doubled-up or overwritten. I'll have a better idea once I've taken off some stuff and given her a bath. It would be unusual for an engine re-conditioner to re stamp the CR wouldn't it?
  25. Oldskoolrob

What can you tell me from this engine number....?

Ooh, here's something weird - It's stamped 9.75:1, not 9.35....maybe it was a Vitesse of some description?
