    Don't trust anything

Mine is a bit opposite - starts very well, runs well, no misses....lead at coil measures 12V (or full battery volts). Somebody has removed the ballast methinks? No obvious hacks visible.

    Rare Italian 2000TC Perhaps?

Getting the 3.5" bore to give a 2L total displacement would require a stroke of 1.6". I find that possibility pretty remote!

    Cooling a V8

With the overflow feed from the rad going into the bottom of the overflow tank I dont think vapour or gas can push fluid out of the overflow. Take your point re the filling process though.

    wiring diagram

AFAIK there is only one 10v stabilizer, on the back of the instrument cluster. In both S2 (round instruments) and S1 (strip speedo) stabilizer is shown feeding only the temp gauge and the fuel tank gauge.

    Anti-freeze

A difference in coolant behaviour due to either the steel shim head gasket or a composite late gasket I just MIGHT buy, but any other reason I have a lot of trouble with. The alloy hasnt changed since it was cast (or between early and late ones), I havent seen any coolant that mentions...

retrofit oil pressure and oil temperature

have an SD1 oil pump cover here. The larger sender (gauge?) is parallel, 20 tpi, 1/2", looks like needs a washer to seal it. Small device looks tapered, is 18 tpi, approx 1/2". The oil gallery drillings in the cover are 1/2".

Series 1 V8 Temp gauge questions.....

Very common on modern cars. MX5 after ~95 do this, where before it was a true reading. The late gauges should be read as 'Cold...Normal...Head gasket'. There is an article on the web about how to fix this problem. Our 2009 Mazda3 is similar - gauge doesnt move while temp goes as high as 96C...

    Rear spark plugs

I just noticed in the back of the SD1 manual there is a spark plug socket listed - a crows foot version, with a piece off to the side with a 1/2" square hole for a socket extension.

Series 1 V8 Temp gauge questions.....

Yes, but a worn stabilizer may give fluctuating readings. A higher voltage may give the symptoms you are seeing.

Series 1 V8 Temp gauge questions.....

When I got my S2 v8 , in first couple of runs I thought the gauge was slow to rise, so I looked at the sender. Checking the voltage on the lead it seemed to be unstable, where its supposed to be stabilized on 10v - this is worth checking as it would indicate the stabilizer is failing. It should...

travel of master cylinder piston on a 1949 P3/75.

I suspect Derrick is having trouble with front/rear linkage. IIRC the rear linkage will absorb motion until the rear linings are all contact with then drums before it will move the hydraulic piston much - do you have anything on the set up of the linkage?

travel of master cylinder piston on a 1949 P3/75.

All I can find in what remains of my little blue book on the 48-56 cars is 1/4" free play at the pedal. IIRC the master is an unusual shape, different diameters and a large nut on the end to aid dismantling and cleaning. Two rubber cups inside, one on the piston, one stationary that the piston...

    P6B S Project Car

Gear selection now seems sorted - all available and little wasted motion. Good road test today. Next - no AM radio, and FM a bit patchy - aerial lead suspect. How do I get to this - its a roof mounted unit that can lie flat. Will I expose it all if I pull the driver side A pillar cover, then the...

    Rear spark plugs

Number 8 on a manual v8 can be a challenge. I have found the type below can make life easier. Undoing the first time may require additional torque applied, but the handle length means its difficult to over tighten after that. The universal in the linkage is a big help. My old plug socket came...

    P6B S Project Car

I am breaking the earth lead, and both are shrink wrapped so only closing the switch can complete the circuit - dont want unexpected power while working on it. Both connections have big flat washers on them. The flat braids are the same as the earth lead on the 928 - 4.7L V8 & 10:1 CR, so they...

    P6B S Project Car

Demetris, Exactly my thinking. The lever end should have an acorn on it (pic somewhere above). From underneath there is a cream-ish ring visible in the selector shaft hole, which I suspect is the bottom half of the plastic liner that goes with the metal acorn type levers. Seeing as I have almost...

Bosch JFU4 Distributor fitted to 2200TC

FWIW I would recommend some sort of HE ignition for the 4 cyl. Many years ago in the early days of CDI kits I put one on my TC and it transformed it - much better starts, more flexible, better economy. IIRC gap went out to .040" or more. Some of the Bosch systems were HE - as on the 928, which...

Here is my battery isolator. Some room for extra insulation to ensure no accidental grounding, but there is little exposed metalwork in the area.

Revisited fix to acorn area - seems I had too much thickness above where the bulge needs to be, and it restricted movement. Removed some material and refitted, can now get all gears when stationery. Will road test again before refitting the tunnel finisher.

    P6B S Project Car

Mixed progress. Gear gate is much nicer, narrow sideways...but 3rd requires a conscious pressure to the right, where 4th is easy and natural. Worse though is reverse is unobtainable - all I can get there is 2nd. Not looking forward to ripping up the tunnel cover again - may put it on the jacks...

    Cooling a V8

Quattro - this is the same as my arrangement now. If I have put too much coolant in the overflow tank it should get blown out on the first run up to temp, and then be stable. Might get a new flat cap for the rad filler neck to be sure it all seals in the right places.

    Car covers

I have a Tyvek cover on the 928, been using it for years now. Its very light, being unlined, and fairly easy to put on....although it can be a pain when you cant throw it right over, and it slides off the roof. Only used indoors to keep dust and flies off the paint. Had another cheap cover on a...

    Cooling a V8

Back again. On further checking I find - the new cap is marked 'Recovery System' and has the extra rubber seal just under the cap . The old cap does not have the extra rubber seal, and it will fit on the overflow bottle! So the extra rubber seal was the problem. Now have fitted the pressure cap...
