Switches on 1968 2000TC are they supposed to illuminate?

I only took delivery of my P6 on Friday evening. I've just done a 188 mile round trip and the car performed faultlessly. My question is should the switches (wiper, lights, choke etc) in the panel above the radio on my 1968 2000TC illuminate when the lights are on? My speedo, fuel gauge, temp etc all work fine. Many thanks in advance. Gary

I’m fact that was a design decision. Part of a minimalist design to reduce driver distraction. The idea is that they are different shapes so you could feel them in the dark.

Took ownership of a 1969 2000SC this afternoon, belonged to a club member who sadly passed away a few years back, he kept the car in a much loved state and driving it 20 miles back to my garage I realised that the switches are so tactile, sdibbers I get it now.....

They have a great feel don’t they? Amazing that they feel as tight now as when they were made 50 odd years ago.

Lighted switches were not really a thing in the late 50's went the car was designed, so I don't think there was much deciding going on. The switch shapes was deliberate of course.

The S2 green switches really do look as though they should illuminate though you do get a mild glow through them.
The P5 switches are very nice at night when the functions are lit up.

I think it is safe to say the P6 and P5 are great places to be sat in with the ignition either on or off. The nostalgic smell of old car leather interior with hints of petrol and dare I say mildew only add to the experience. I tried to get my other half to create a scented candle for car guys, still waiting....

I hope you’re not married to Gwyneth Paltrow!
I agree they feel comfy places to sit. Especially if the clock still works, that subtle ticking finishes the feeling of cozy.

@sdibbers  I meant like the old car smell! One of my jobs is to fix the clock......any links to past advice on here would be great
Normally it’s the internal fuse that blows. It’s a soldered fuse wire that leads to the coil on the solenoid that breaks with age. Resolver that it’ll tick again. I should really get mine professionally cleaned in an ultrasound cleaner as the clock itself loses or gains time depending on temperature.

I never looked at the clock in my first P6 which never worked because I guess I just wanted to drive it all the time, was 30 years ago mind. There was three of us with P6s and not a working clock between us! Thanks for the advice, will let you know how I get on.

I know what you mean. Mines stopped again so I need to get in there too. It’s the only German part on the car and way over complicated!
