After many years away I have returned (with a new user name due to an identity hack and associated nausea that goes with it).
For those new (ish) to the forum I am the proud owner of Pooh Bear, a 1974 P6B S that happened to have rolled off the assembly line at the same time and place as me!
He was very sad when I got him but is slowly being turned into a track car for me to thrash around in my spare time.
Since I was last on here about 6 years ago he has been flogged and (ahem) broken again, so is now under surgery for more improvements.
I got bored and cut his front off. If nothing else this will make getting engines in and out a lot easier, and make more room for his sodding great aluminium radiator. There is also a bigger 16 row oil cooler with thermostat to be fitted. Along with an electric power steering pump, welding up the holes in the firewall, new pedal box with separate front and rear brake master cylinders, hydraulic throwout bearing for the clutch, and a multitude of welding, grinding and general mess inducing activities. The biggest job is removing the entire floor from firewall to rear seats and putting in a flat floor with a new tunnel to accept the side exhausts and mufflers. I still need to sort out the headers but not being able to leave the house except to go to work or food shopping is putting a dampener on my random metal buying excursions.
I have included a few photos of what I have done in the last few days. The observant will notice that the holes for the (ex) front bumper and rad cross member support are 15mm lower and 15mm further forward. This is to allow the crossmember to sit lower and further forward so that the radiator will actually fit. The extra holes on the top are due to me measuring once, drilling twice and then realising that I had measured from the inner edge instead of the outer edge. They are speed holes, honest!
Hope everyone is well and keep that way. I am practising social distancing by locking myself in the shed with the car.
Cheers

Welcome back!

Looking at that engine bay picture, Pooh must be the only P6 with a heater that is worse than Hazel's ;):D

Nice to see you here again Guy. Looking forward to seeing the new floor, tunnel and exhaust take shape. That rad and twin fan set-up looks snazzy! Is it made to measure or re-purposed from a different application? Have you driven your car on a racetrack before?

Heater is out and not going back in! I intend to weld up the holes in the firewall and mount clutch and brake reservoir on it. I have yet to come up with a ventilation plan (apart from leaving the window open?), but might use a small fan to blow through the face vents. One job at a time!
Radiator is from a Nisan Silvia S14, and is an upgraded race version. It has a 50mm thick triple flow core and has slightly more surface area than the stock rad. The fans are twin 1000cfm and will be staged to come on at different temps. Should keep the coolant under control in conjunction with the oil cooler when pressing on.
I have previously had the car around Hidden Valley in Darwin. It suffered a terminal gearbox failure which led to a Muncie 4 speed race box being fitted. It’s latest catastrophe is a diff that only drives one wheel. I am planning to fit the whole rear end off a late model Jag or Daimler with a lsd. This last one is down a bit on the list of things to do, but essential to getting the car to go. I just have to hunt a good one down and fit it up. How hard can it be?
Lots to do but restricted to waiting on parts to be delivered, and a new welder since the weld in my one escaped in a cloud of smoke, and crackling noises, and a funny smell, and tripping every fuse in the house. I think it’s broken.
cheers
Guy
