Rear band

-Thats great harvey thanks, I see what looks like a seal on the piston on the lever that is where mine is leaking from the cylinder.Hope you understand what i mean,

Hi ,Harvey sorry to be a pain but do you think it should be dripping oil from the inside of the servo body from behind the piston.

Probably not. For the time it takes you may as well remove and dismantle the servo to check the seal. When you remove the servo a spacer block will fall out, putting it back can be difficult, and if you get it wrong it can either lock the band on, or make it not work at all, but by holding the block in place with Vaseline it is possible to get it all fitted back together properly. Rear servo piston seals are a common failure.

Once the servo is out you will see the register in the band, and the register in the servo lever, which the block fits in between.

If you look you can see where it fits here:

Take no notice of how much to back off when you adjust, it's 1 turn off, not 2.

Harvey as i have no access hole to the rear band adjuster is it possible to measure the gap between the band as i have the sump off and can access the gap. This is in a ford pop hotrod, so no hole in tunnel Please.

I can't think of a way to set it up without using the adjuster. As difficult as it might be I would suggest cutting a nice round hole in the tunnel in the correct place using a holesaw, and then fit a grommet in the hole once the adjustment is done.

Ok Harvey thanks i,ve got the servo off and getting it tested tomorrow will let you know. once i,ve refitted it.

Hi Harvey, had the servo tested, and the oil seal had failed as you suggested ,so had it replaced all gears are working ,I would like to thank you very much for your help with this, I need to sort out the linkage now , have you any pictures of how the gear stick assembly bolts to the floor please, once again THANKS, John

No problem, happy to help.

What gearlever are you using, and are you using the P6B/P5B linkage rods and compensator?

Dont really Know what model it is what do you mean by compensator

The compensator is an ally bracket that bolts on to the bellhousing, with a slider inside it, and a bellcrank inside the slider, so the rod comes horizontally from the gearlever to the bellcrank, and then down from the other side of the bellcrank to the selector lever on the side of the box. A 3rd rod locates the slider to the gearlever mounting plate.

There used to be a site with parts book pics I could link to, but that seems to have disappeared.

Ok thanks are understand now, that seems to work ok ,but only when i remove the selector gate, which is not mounted to the correct plate as it has been made to bolt to the floor, hope you get what i mean

Hello Harvey
Can you do an online diagnosis for me .
BW35
Works well in all forward gears. ie Kick-down OK. Change up Ok. In fact drives beautifully in forward.
In reverse I have shuddering and slippage . The car will struggle to drive in reverse on a slight incline. Im afraid to reverse up a hill in case I do more harm.
Your thoughts?
Am I going down "jonboy's" road?
regards- Gerald

Yep, rear band or rear servo fault. You will have also lost some or all of the engine braking in "1".

Thanks "Hp6"
So do you think adjusting the rear band as you described to Jonboy would be my first approach? Seems the simplest way forward.
Mines a '72 RHD - what side of the tunnel will the adjuster be.
Ive got the rest of the process from your discussion with jonboy.
