1975 P6 3500S 4 speed - Filling plug for gearbox ?

Good day,

I have recently joined the Classic Rover Forum.

I wish to change the oil on the unit but not for want of trying I cannot locate or see where the filing plug is !!
I have had the car up on a friend hoist and used a Borescope but cannot see it.
On the passenger’s side there is very little clearance ( no more that 10 mm, so it is the driver’s side that I am looking at.
There is nothing on the side albeit there seems to be “bosses” in the casting sections in between the ribs, but no filing plug.
I sincerely hope that the plug is not located on the top since access would be impossible.
Could someone help ?

Many thanks.

It's about 100mm up near the back on the passenger side (UK car). It's a filler and level plug, just keep putting it until it starts to run out again.

I might have a pic somewhere

Richard

Thanks Richard.

From what I can see the drain plug (about a 25mm AF hex plug) is located on drivers side at the back and at the lowest point.
If anything is located on the passenger side than I cannot get to it since virtually no clearance between the body tunnel section and the gearbox casing.

Rgds,

Agree with Richard re location.
You may have to create an access hole in the tunnel under the carpet with a Starret cutter and then cover with a plate / grommet.
Be careful what oil you put in it, they don't like Hypoid 80. You can use ATF or Redline MTL or Castrol Syntrans.
One of my LT77's has Mobil 1 0W 40 fully synth engine oil with added Molyslip and shifts nice.

Thanks Guys.
I will try to measure out and take a hit with the starret hole cutter.
I recently bought a small pump unit to pump oil in but If I do this then don't need the pump unit.
Yes, I have read up on the oils to use and have got some ATF, although others don't seem to like this !! Seems to have some debates but I spoke to a guy who builds the gearboxes and he said stick with ATF. I dont use the car much, it is off the road in winter and only used occasionally at other times.

If you pull up the carpets on the passenger side transmission tunnel, you may find a hole already there. Mine used to be an auto, so you can nearly get up in there and walk about, but I am sure when I had one years ago, a manual tunnel with an LT77, that there was a large rubber bung there somewhere. The filler is in the alloy bit at the back, not the cast main section of the gearbox.

Careful with the oil as Cobraboy says. I use redline MTL and it's brilliant.

Good day Gents,
Managed to look at this last night and it looks as if access is in fact on passenger side tunnel.
The 1 st picture shows possibly where the original access point for the filling – large round hole with rubber bung. Also, the small rectangular access point seems to allow access to bolts.
I assume that the large cable is the speedo cable.
Pic no 2, I assume that the hex plug (about 22mm AF ??) is the filling plug? What do you think Richard?
Pic no3 simply shows the relative position/place that I will create an access via hole cutter (40 mm)
Apologies if I don’t revert soon as I have to attend a seminar shortly and will not access the Forum until the afternoon.

Many thanks Colin.

I didn't know it would be so common !!

So you reckon these should fit no problem ?

If you are on a bush replacement quest then check out the two cotton reel bushes on the bottom of the rear of the box, and also the bumper rubber in the same location.

The selector shaft always leaks oil where it goes into the box from the remote, this runs down and rots out the bushes mentioned.

Many thanks. will check these out at the same time.
Do you know part numbers for them ?
1) two cotton reel bushes on the bottom of the rear of the box,
2) bumper rubber
