ZF 4HP22 dimensions?

I originally had an ex 1972 p6 3.5 and 4 speed manual box and with both getting extremely worn replaced them with a 4.6 and 5 speed manual SD1 gearbox. However, despite being rebuilt by a Land Rover transmission specialist around 2 years ago the gearbox still leaks and now its getting noisy too so I'm thinking about a ZF 4HP22 automatic conversion.
The thing is, the SD1 box only just fits in so a dimensioned picture would be really useful - has anyone got one? I've looked on the ZF 4HP22 sticky but couldn't find anything, if it's under ½" wider I might be able to squeeze it in but if it's longer then it won't go - to fit the SD1 box I had this propshaft made and don't think I can get anything shorter.

I think you'll find that from front to flange the ZF is longer than the LT77, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly with the definitive answer for you.
 
The P6 has a different tunnel for the auto so it'd say without that a 3500s would require surgery as the ZF is a tight fit. At the front you need to shave some ribbing and at the back it only just clears the attachment points for the old crossmember. The tunnel is a lot wider to acomodate the BW35. This really shows in my LHD model a there is hardly any room for pedals.

All you need is a standard P6 auto propshaft if the box is built up right as the rearward components are of differing length depending on origin. That means a standard 2WD casing (in my case Jaguar XJ40), a BMW tailcone and a Jaguar XJ flange.

It's not in a P6 Peter, he has a Rover V8 engined trike, I sold him my surplus SU carbs last year and had the pleasure of meeting and witnessing the Matt black beastie.

Rv8 ZF bell housings are fairly chunky for obvious torque converter size reasons, I reckon it will probably be too wide where bellhousing attaches to the main casing.
Length wise I remember measuring my Volvo ZF 22 box with a RR bellhousing attached and it was near on identical to a BW35 if that's any help

I was involved in fitting an LDV V8 ZF box into a P5B and that had to have the prop shortened by about 3.5" IIRC.
A mate also put the same box in place of a BW35 in a hotrod and he needed to shorten his prop as well.
 
That's interesting. I certainly don't want to be spreading inaccurate info.
I've dug up this photo of zf24 RR Bellhousing bolted to zf22 Volvo box alongside my old bw35.

I'm fairly sure the Volvo tail section is shallower than some of the others, the LDV boxes being the longest in total.

Andy informed me when my hybrid box was being built, that it would end up a little longer than the 22 box due to the stator support of the 24 box, in the region of ~13mm.

The ZF is 705 mm long, from bell house face to output flange face.
Width wise 275mm ( ish )
Height wise 305mm ( ish ) at the box case widest point, the bell house is higher
Bell house is 400 x 440 x 200L ( ish )

The ZF is slimmer than the BW35 at the sump side of things, but it is wider at the actual body height, plus the bell house is much bigger in diameter, although you can use another type of bell house and converter to keep the size down, which would also reduce the overall length.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, a quick measure up shows 705mm is too long, it puts the output flange in about the same place as the middle of the LT77 front uj and as you can see in the first post pic, the prop is already just about as short as is possible to make.
Whilst I'd prefer to do it myself I can see this mixing and matching having lots of traps when choosing components so I think I'll look for an auto gearbox specialist with knowledge of these hybrids and take the trike along to them and see what they reckon. (any suggestions for specialists gratefully received, I'm in Kent so Kent/Essex/Herts./Sussex/Surrey preferred but am prepared to travel)

As far as making a hybrid gearbox goes have a word with "eightofthem" on here. He may or may not be able to do any of the fitting, but he can certainly advise you, and build you a gearbox.
