S2 2000 Manual - Gear lever seat

Hello All,

Cleaning up the gear lever seat before putting back on the car I noticed that there seems to be a little play between the ball within the socket of the seat / bush. The seat seems to be in good order apart from some discolouration, but I am not sure that there should be any play at all.
Does this mean that the plastic seat has expanded? Hope not as they are expensive for a little bit of plastic.
Also does the ball in the seat require grease, I am assuming moly grease or LM grease?

Thanks Folks

If there is play between the ball on the lever and the seat then the seat is worn. They are available new. Just pust some ordinary grease on the ball when fitting.

Thank you Harvey, It feels more like is has expanded rather then worn, maybe something to do with the age? I was unsure if the wrong type of grease could degrade the plasstic. Seems like you confirmed as I suspected that I will need a new one after all.

It is mostly wear, which a certain amount of plastic shrinkage on top. The seat was not meant to be greased, in fact Rover is very clear about that in the service manual. That said, everybody does these days. I use a bit of silicone grease myself that is "plastic safe".

Yours
Vern
