Which spark plugs to use?

I'm about to service my 1972 auto V8 P6 but I'm not sure what spark plugs I should get-I also own a 1984 SD1 Vitesse and after some internet research I got some NGK BP6ES plugs for the Vitesse (also possible to use BPR6ES I belive) but I'm not sure if these would be a good choice for the older P6 engine any sugestions please????? Unless you have SD1 heads fitted to your P6 those particular NGK's aren't suitable.
You need the 'short reach' type of plug for the pre-SD1 engine, preferably NGK as they are arguably the best.

If you get stuck the type of plugs you need should be availiable from RPI Engineering, Tel: 01603 891209.

Champion L92Y or L92YC / NGK BP5HS / Unipart GSP 4376 / Beru 14-7B(U) / Bosch W8B© or W175 T35 / Nippon Denso W16FP are all suitable for your engine.

When I took the plugs off my P6 just now they were NGK BP6HS and as per above post had ordered NGK BP5HS - just wondering is it ok. The Rover was driving fine with the NGK 6HS plugs.
 
NGK BP6HS = Champion L87Y

NGK BP5HS = Champion L92Y

L87Y were superceded by L92Y so you're better off with NGK BP5HS

Has anyone used the following spark plugs on the Rover v8?
NGK IRIDIUM BPR6HIX they are listed as a possible along side the standard BP6HS and BP5HS on the NGK website as suitable for the Rover p6 etc.

Hi Peter,

As Rich advised, check and make sure you can confirm the cylinder heads that are on your engine. I would also suggest that an iridium plug, unless it is the same price as the copper items, would be unnecessary for a carburettor fuelled engine. The 4.0 and 4.6 litre Range Rovers used far more expensive plugs, but I don't need nor use them in my engine.

That link actually doesn't detail the differences in terms of plugs and how to note the distinction between the early heads, and all heads from the SD1 onwards in that context.

Peter, measure the depth of thread on your spark plugs. Then just to confirm, measure the depth of thread within the cylinder head. From memory, 10mm or so belong to the P5B and P6B heads, 14mm or so all the other heads.

Starting with the ERC0216 heads (have used these heads recently) all of them and later ones have the long, 19 mm spark plugs. So, for my understanding, easiest way is take out one of your plugs and if it´s the short one, you have a P5/P6 head. To run a later head with a short plug will not work and run an earlier head with a long plug will not work either...
 
I am sure that there was a post a while ago on the forum Jörg, where the owner found they had the wrong plugs in the heads. I think they found or had been using the short thread plugs in later heads. That is why you cannot assume which head you have based on plug thread depth alone. Both plug and head thread depth need to be measured so as to ensure consistency and to provide unequivocal proof.
