Pre-engaged starter motor wiring.

Update:
I traced the short down to the main cable junction in the drivers foot well which carries the battery + cable which joins another cable to the starter motor. After some WD40 I managed to remove the nut and separated the cable expecting the fault to be the breakdown of the isolating nylon shoulder washer, only to find the brown lead which travels up under the dash onto another junction box/connector which has the dead short.
I removed the junction box as much as I could, but looks like more of the dash needs to be removed. Has anyone had any issues with this. See pictures.
I would appreciate any help and advice. Does this box breakdown? If so, where can I obtain one from? Or is there a suitable replacement?
Many thanks.
Best regards,
Dave
Hi Dave.

My shunt burnt right out a few years ago. So I completely rewired it and it is still working fine. I will see if I can find the photo's I took and post them here.

Steve :)

Hi Dave.

My shunt burnt right out a few years ago. As I couldn't find another shunt I completely cleaned the old one and I completely rewired it. It is still working fine today. The photos are the ones I took after finding the burn out. Then marked the wires with coloured cable ties to guide me for rewiring with new wiring. As you can see from the photo codes the date was April 2018. I hope this helps you, m8.

Steve :)

Ouch! Did you find the base cause of the burnout?
Morning.

Yes. If you look at the photos you can see where two wires had melded together causing a short. I think they had been like it before I got the car. There was also some badly repaired wiring I had to replace as well. Have not had any problem with it since I repaired it........touch wood! Lol.

Wow, that's a serious burn out. Mine was nothing like that, so a blessing really and the culprit was the solenoid on the starter which shorted with he main wire (smaller gauge) to the positive side of the ignition coil getting warm, but cooking the other positive (once the cold feed start voltage from the starter) cable from the other side of the tachometer. Once I had changed that it was all ok again.

Good to hear, Dave. Can be a pain when you think you've fixed something only fort something to do with it goes wrong. Lol. Now just got to get my starter motor sorted and hopefully get Minstrel back on the road.

Minstrel. Is that the name of your car? I named mine Gene, from the series "life on Mars" when Sam wakes up back in 1973, although mine is a 72 P6.
Crazy things we do...lol

When my wife bought him for me she named him Minstrel as he is Black & White. Lol. I like the series Life On Mars but the Mrs didn't. Lol. I had some good times as a teenager in the early 70s. Also owned 2 P5's in 1973 too. I had a taxi firm. I had both the 3.5 Coupe and 3.5 Saloon. Even to this day the 3.5 Coupe is still the most comfortable car I have ever driven! Happy Days!!

Wow, You have a very generous wife indeed. The 70's were the best time for me, cars, music, the motoring scene and the sense of moral value which in today's society is missing. Perhaps post some pictures of Minstrel.

We just call our cars etc 'The'

The Rover, The Cobra, etc etc. Sometimes when trouble rears an extra word is added - The B*****d Cobra overheated on the M25 ...........

My wife Ann only paid £375 for the car! The guy just wanted the money back he had spent 5 new tyres. The pics dated 02-03-2016 were taken the day I brought Minstrel home. The first 3 are what the front of Minstrel looks like now. The ones dated 30th April were taken 2020 after I had sprayed the rear wings, rear valance and decker panel. Still got the doors, front wings, boot, bonnet and front doors to respray.

That's a steal. Nice spray job on the rear. What is the underneath like? It is a nice feeling when you document each stage (I've done this) and see the difference which in my mind is truly rewarding. Time and money well spent. Thanks for sharing your pictures Stephen.
I have just ordered replacement front seat belts for Gene as they both do not operate as they should and the webbing after almost 50 years certainly brings into question the safety, so the only option is brand new.

I have a few hundred photos of work done since 2016. Spent 17/18 months just cutting rust out and welding new plate in. It truly is a labour of love!! The floor and chassis of the car was virtually non existent. Minstrel spent 2 years parked on the kerb of a urban road. Had more water under the rear seat than my bath!!

Did you make up floor panels, or managed to get genuine panels?
