P6B S Project Car

Decided after many years away from P6s to get back in. Drove the one below today. 1974, 9.25:1 CR, UK built exported to Oz, not a NZ CKD car. Presents extremely well - paint is newish, pretty well done, no visible overspray. Engine bay is clean, nicely black, engine cleanish, but not obviously tarted up as it might be by a dealer - visible oil leak here and there, drop of water out of pump after a short run. Oil is nice and clean, but inside rocker cover is dry.
Upsides - paint, external presentation is good. Interior is very good - seats clean (dark fabric), new carpets (not quite right, but OK), new door cards all fit well.
Downsides - front seats have been repadded, but overdone. Steering a little woolly in the centre. Very sloppy gear lever, clutch a little odd - but these are very hard to get used to IMHO!
Has Konis on the front, but set at hard, not very flexible.
End plan is to do up a 3.9 injected and fit it with an LT77 - or R380 if findable!
Very tempted if the price is right. Not worried by mechanical issues, and seats are fixable.
Will this car have the electric fuel pump?

Had an email the other day from somebody wanting to sell me a car - in response to add in local Rover Club (melbourne, Oz). When I asked what he had he sent me a pic of a nice BRG 3500S with SD1 wheels...plate ending in 585K.....its in UK, only A$1000 to ship to Oz, no government involvement.

From the engine pic below, with fuel filter visible at front, does it look like it has a mechanical pump? When did electric pumps come in, or were they NADA cars only? Which cars had a fuel spill/return system ? The carbs look like HIF6.

It's the wrong filter fitted, and the top pipework to the carbs has been changed to accomodate it, so the bottom pipe will probably have been changed to a hose as well, but it could still have a mechanical pump. Electric pumps were NADA only AFAIK. (Except for the VIPs maybe). Your car has the spill return fitted, and they are HIF6 carbs.

FYI the alternator fan guard is fitted back to front.

Current plan is to eventually fit a 3.9 or 4.6(much harder to find here). If I was to stay on carbs for simplicity, would there be any advantage in going for HIF7 carbs? Were HD8 (my pref) made where the throat was not horizontal? Seems all the HIF models used the same mounting bolt pattern, so that would make life easier.
thanks

I ran my 4.6 on 2" HS8s where it produced @ 236bhp. Doing nothing else but changing the intake to a 360 Offenhauser and fitting an Autolite 4100 four barrel the engine made 270 bhp. If you are sourcing carbs anyway, you might consider a four barrel set up for better breathing.

Why would somone put the radiator warning label on upside down- bit odd.

That's a lot of Horsies, o_O I want some more now :)

A good torque figure that.
My 3.9 in the black car has typhoon cam, rhoads, short guides, ported heads, cant remember CR, 360 Offy, 390 Holley, long 4 into 1 headers, light flywheel, and makes 239hp, cant remember torque.
So you are not far away. It is tough to get more when you are over 200 unless you really open your wallet.
