Steering box swap?

The box will fit to the base unit, but the ratio will be different, and there may be issues with the wiper motor depending on which type is fitted. Pics of both boxes in their original locations would clarify things.

I have a 1970 V8, was contemplating reconditioning the steering box in 2005 when I read an article in a British magazine which said that Wadhams had new old stock steering boxes.
I contacted them and specifically indicated I had a V8 and they said that they certainly had the appropriate box. When it arrived it was clearly a box for a 2000 not for a 3500. I rang them and they said that was all they had been selling for the past 16 years and no-one had a problem. They did however offer a refund if I returned the box to them. Given that I would've had to pay freight from Australia to the UK this was not an economically viable alternative.

Did have the box fitted, despite the different ratio and obvious different appearance. As Tony who fitted it for me said, it was a lot safer then the box he took out, as it had no play in it.
Have had no problem with it since, but still have the original box and may get it reconditioned sometime in the future if I really want the car to remain original.

That is very disappointing.

Thanks for the information. I'm not even sure if the v8 one is worn yet. I just need time to check it out. The car has quite a pronounced low speed wobble on the steering wheel. I know the steering box is low on oil and I'm assuming that I've damaged it by driving it low on oil. I may be wrong though, it could be a wheel out of balance as the wobble seems to coincide with a full road wheel rotation if that makes sense. Having said that, it disappears above 30 or so mph.

I would have your front wheels checked and balanced before looking further. I doubt very much that the vibration is being caused by the steering box.

Ron.

Thanks for the suggestions. When the engine is back in I'll swap the wheels back to front to see What effect it has. The tyres are rather old. Good tread but at least ten years old.
